Cuisine: Japanese Mochi Donuts – Dessert – Halal friendly

Mimochi donuts is Perth’s first ever donut store that specialises in mochi donut. Wait…does that mean there is actual mochi inside the donut? ❌ Nope! Mimochi’s donuts are made with different blends of flour some of which are all-purpose flour, mochi flour, (and more) which gives them that signature soft chew!

There’s something oddly comforting about the chewiness of this donut. Now, full honesty here, we are not usually big fans of donut. But this? We could easily devour a box of six. It’s light, fluffy and just sweet enough for the Asian palate.

BACKSTORY – Meet the Owner & Team

Every business has a face behind it, but a few wear as many hats as Celine. Mimochi’s founder, handyman and all-round mimochi mastermind. What started as a craving for Mister Donut after a trip to Taiwan turned into Perth’s very first mochi donut store. Fun fact: The two kids on Mimochi’s logo are her very own bundle of joy, Juju and Harvey!

From developing new flavours to fixing equipments, you’ll often find her hands-on at both stores, making sure every donut (and customer) gets a little extra love. Her passion shows in the tiniest details from branding, to the ever-changing monthly flavours that keep regulars coming back for more. Mimochi now has expanded to 2 different locations, Morley and Victoria Park with a tight team of 13.

BACKSTORY – Concept

If you have been a Mimochi fan since day one, you’ll remember their very first store in Northbridge. While that chapter has closed, Mimochi has since made a cosy new home in Victoria Park (pictured above). Fast forward to July 2024, they proudly opened their second store in Morley!(pictured below) And just when we thought things couldn’t get any cuter, they’ve recently rebranded with a fresh yellow, white and brown theme that’s as warm and inviting as their donuts.

DRINKS

YES!! They do drinks and they do them well. Quick heads up though: all drinks at Mimochi are cold only, so if you are after something hot, you might want to pair your donut with something from your nearby favourite cafe instead. Mimochi recently launched their cold foam and Matcha series, and they’ve also got a fun range non-coffee lattes and frappes (refer to their drinks menu below). If you are looking for an ‘alone’ time, Mimochi offers dine-in option for 1-2 donuts and a drink!

What we Ordered (and What We recommend you try)

Here’s what we got during our visit (JUNE FLAVOUR ROTATION):

  • Pistachio Matcha Latte + Cold foam ($8 +$1, for dine in)
  • Biscoff donut ($4.50, Dine in)
  • 6 pack ($24 – Matcha, Lemon Poppy, Cinnamon sugar, Original glazed, Milk chocolate and White chocolate)

Our thoughts:

The Pistachio Matcha Latte was rich and creamy however quite filling, with a balance blend of pistachio and earthy matcha. Definitely a drink for matcha lovers who enjoy a thicker sip. The cold foam was not too sweet however, together with the Pistachio matcha latte, it was slightly a sugar overload.

Biscoff donut was coated generously in Biscoff crumbs, adding a nice crunch and just right amount of sweetness. As for the 6 pack, here is a quick breakdown of the flavour profile:

  • Matcha (rotation) – mild bitterness, great for those who enjoy subtle sweetness and slightly bitter flavours
  • Lemon poppy (rotation) – sweet zesty tang, with tiny pops from the seeds
  • Cinnamon sugar (staple) – perfectly balanced, cinnamon powder did not overpower the sugar
  • Original glazed (staple) – simple and nostalgic
  • Milk chocolate (staple) – crowd pleasers, great for classic chocolate lovers
  • White chocolate (staple) – great for kids, slightly sweeter side

If you are not big on sweet flavours, we’d recommend trying:

  • Plain
  • Cinnamon Sugar
  • Original Glazed

RATE:

  • Price: $$
  • Donut taste: 8/10
  • Drink: 9.5/10

What to order

First timer? Go for their 4 pack ($18) or 6 pack ($24), it’s a great way to sample a variety. If you like something not too sweet, we recommend these staples:

  • Plain
  • Cinnamon sugar
  • Original glazed
  • Dark chocolate

Drinks-wise, their Matcha series is definite must-try! Just finish dinner? Grab their bites from 6PM to 9PM.

Donut storage tips

To keep your Mimochi donuts soft and chewy, here’s what we recommend:

  • Best consumed within 24 hours of purchase (freshest on the day!)
  • No fridge please! (trust us, they will harden)
  • Store at room temperature
  • Low humidity is best (too much moisture = soggy donuts)
  • Pop them on a plate with a netted food cover / store in an airtight container
  • Avoid microwaving as it can change the texture. But… 5 to 10 secs should still be okay for a quick warm-up
